Personal Statement (Chapter 7)

I will attend Math tutoring every week even if I do not have any questions, just for practice and clarification.
My greatest hurdle to achieving this is always scheduling something and not going to it, because I find other things to do. Things or activities that are not helpful for my classes.
I will eliminate this hurdle by telling someone that I am going to tutoring so I will be held accountable for my actions, because if I just tell myself I am going, I too can tell myself you don't have to go.
My time frame for achieving this is going to the first tutoring session on this Sunday February 13, 2011 at 8:15
My reward for achieving this is a movie after attending each tutoring session, after I review my notes and do some practice on my on.

Clemons and its affect on my study habits.....

Last semester, I only visited the library when I needed to study for tests or to socialize with someone who know I was going to there. I can recall only checking out books for my Internet Research Project for Prof. Bowles. I could have improved my study habits by going to library to complete homework, study or to read for classes. I heard people tell me to study in the library however I thought I could do things my way and get great results like I did in high school. I was completely mistaken. I learned that my habits were all wrong, and it was pretty much too late to turn it around.

After reading the book and understanding what works best for me, I have learned that being away from my room is most beneficial to the amount of work I get done. For the past 2 weeks, I have come to Clemons and have done my homework until I was finished. I have formed a small study group with Joy, Jordan and Courtney. We push each other to complete assignments and help each other when we don't understand. Unlike last semester, I read in entirety for all my classes. I also start on assignments early and I try not to procrastinate or put things off for another day when I free time to do them at the library.

I have better expectations for this semester, academically and being more involved on Grounds. I can see things working better for me. I have a positive attitude towards work and being at school as a whole. I believe because of my poor first semester grades, it has propelled me to make a 360 degree change in my habits and attitudes towards classes and homework.

Reading for my English Lit Class( Black Writers in America)

After reading about 8 short stories and one book by black authors, I realized I have a passion for African American literature and literary criticism. As I could always remember I have always wanted to be a doctor. Specifically I wanted to become a pediatrician, however after my last semester in high school and my first semester at UVa, I have learned that I have I am interested in literature and close readings. I have learned that I enjoy writing more than being tested on information. I have researched major and minor requirements for English as well as African American Studies.

Something that Sparked my Intellectual and Spiritual Interest

Being in college has allowed me understand that every nice person you meet isn’t always nice as they appear. They seem to be perfect and faultless, when you actuality they are human, like we all are and make mistakes. After that being said, I would like to say that I view myself as being a person growing into the Christian walk of life, and I know I sin and make mistakes concerning my religion everyday, however I understand that God is the only one that can judge my decisions and actions. This brings to me to the topic which has affected my spirit concerning my religious beliefs and being apart of a sorority in college, which I thought was completely plausible in God’s eyes. However I guess my thoughts were incorrect according the Divine Three.
The Divine Three is a ministry started by three African American students who attend the University. They have online videos of sermons where they preach or in my opinion bash college experience through misuse of God's word. In a way I think the original idea of starting ministry is sounds perfectly fine, however I only believe it can be successful to those who have good intentions. The three people behind the organization have caused a buzz around campus and an article was written in the Cavalier Daily about their views of fraternity and sorority life and how it is connected to the workings of the devil. The article was written in yesterday’s newspaper, entitled, “Who’s playing devil’s advocate?” by Stephanie Waities. In my opinion they slander something that they nothing about, being that neither of them have when apart of Greek Life, here or anywhere for that matter. How can somebody can speak on issues, which they haven’t personally experienced? It’s borderline hypocrisy. A quote from the clips is “These people going into these sororities and fraternities, are pledging their all to them. And they still think that they are Christians. Pledging your all to something that is not God and God alone, is tantamount to taking up arms with the Devil.” This line makes me angry and sort of sorry for them to believe that God ordained them to judgers of other people. I thought Christians were supposed to non-judgmental towards one another and to offer advice without bashing opinions and decisions.

NYTimes Article of Interest: "Google Art Project Provides Access to Works and Museums

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/02/07/arts/design/07google.html?ref=todayspaper

Google has launched a website that offers online viewing of museums around the world. It offers up close and magnifying views of paintings and other works of art visible from your computer screen. Roberta Smith, the writer says there are many bugs to be worked out but the site offers more than 1,000 works of art on the site. Smith claims that because of Google, a viewer can see something that wasn't visible before, "Google maintains that, beyond details you may not have noticed before, you can see things not normally visible to the human eye." I didn't take her word for it, I did some viewing of my own and I must agree with Smith that the paintings, the ceiling works, and other pieces of art work are incredible, giving the credit to Google. She goes on to say that googleartproject.com offers great reproductions that allow the viewer to magnify the picture, "What you see is a very good reproduction that offers the option to pore over the surface with an adjustable magnifying rectangle. This feels like an eerie approximation, at a clinical, digital remove, of the kind of intimacy usually granted only to the artist and his assistants, or conservators and preparators." Smith also says that Google enhances the online art experience, which before seemed a little sketchy. This venture by Google is the "latest phase of simulation that begin with the invention of photography." My favorite line of the whole article is the last line,"For all that time they have been the next best thing to being there. Now the next best thing has become better, even if it will never be more than next best." This line says that nothing is better than the original works of art, however this is the next best thing. I hope that you will find your way to the site, making a few impromptu visits to world renowned galleries and museums, without getting up from your computer.

Personal Action Statement (Chapter 1)

I will work hard to receive a 3.0 or better this semester. My greatest hurdle to achieving this is my time management skills, being that I procrastinate, and sleep during the day whenI could be doing more productive, and I am easily distracted by social networks and friends. I will eliminate this hurdle by using my time more wisely during the week like going to the library during the day to cut out sleeping, thus going to sleep at a more reasonable hour. I will stay on top of my readings for class and be prepared to participate in class discussion. I will ask more questions when I need help. I will visit office hours for each class at least three times this semester, not only before big assignments are due and tests are given. I will refrain from using social networks as much as I do, because they hinder my academic achievement. My time frame for completing this is one semester. My reward for achieving this is some new sunglasses.
